The solstice running route will depart from the Peaks Trailhead in Frisco, CO. It follows the Peaks trail around Rainbow Lake to the Colorado trail junction where you will turn west and climb over the 10-Mile Range. This section of the Colorado trail is also known as Miners Creek. From the summit of the range you will drop over the backside and descend until you get to the Wheeler trail. The Wheeler trail will have you climbing back over the range and dropping into the high alpine Crystal Lakes area. Jump on Crystal Lake Jeep Road for a half mile descent until you get to the Burro trail. The Burro trail will meander down through aspen and mixed conifer forest until it hits the base of Peak 9 (Beaver Run) in the Breckenridge Ski Resort where you will run by Maggie Pond and cross Main Street. From here you can take the stairs by Empire Burger, through the back parking lot to Ridge Street. Make a left on Ridge, a right on Jefferson and run straight back to the Breckenridge Elementary School. There is a gate by the school you can run through and head back to Carter Park. Run through the parking lot to the trailhead. Your first drop bag location will be located there. Just look for the prayer flags and refuel!
From here take the Carter Park switchbacks up to Moonstone trail and cross Moonstone Road. Now you are on Barney Ford trail where you will climb through the trees towards Baldy Mountain. You will pop out on Sally Barber Road (dirt). Take Sally Barber up to Sally Barber mine and descend until you come to French Gulch Road (also dirt). Make a left on French Gulch and then a right on Humbug Hill Jeep Road. This is where your second drop bag location will be. Again, just look for the prayer flags!
Climb Humbug Hill and make a right onto the Great Flumes trail. From here on out plan on being in the trees and keep your head up for course markings and wildlife. Traverse through dense forest on Farncomb Hill, cross South Fork Swan Road and make your way up Edwin Carter trail to the Colorado trail junction. From there look for North Fork Swan Road where you will see prayer flags and the third drop bag location.
Continue to follow the West Ridge section of the Colorado trail all the way to Revette Drive where you will run around the south side of the pond, cross the bridge and find your fourth drop bag location. After refueling take the trail to HWY 9. Carefully cross the road and make a right onto the rec. path, cross the bridge and make a left back onto Gold Hill/Colorado trail. Take the single track all the way back to the Peaks trail junction where you will make a right and gloriously return to the post run events at the Peaks Trailhead.
***Please plan to carry a map. They will be available at the start. The course will be marked in some questionable locations but do not depend on it. There will be a few course marshals out on course as well, but do not depend on it.
